How will tire recycling change under the new Tires Regulation
On December 31, the Used Tires Program operated by Ontario Tire Stewardship will cease to operate.

On January 1, 2019 a new, mandatory tire recycling system comes into effect and tire producers will become directly responsible and accountable for managing tires at end-of-life, as outlined in the Tires Regulation under the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, 2016.

Producers will be required to establish and operate tire collection and management systems and meet enforceable individual tire collection and recycling targets. Most producers will require the services of a producer responsibility organization (PRO) to meet their collection and recycling targets and to report on their behalf.

PROs can establish and operate tire collection and management systems on behalf of producers or arrange with collectors, haulers, retreaders and processors to provide the services that producers will require to meet their collection and recycling targets.
